Over the past few years, Canada has experienced dynamic growth and activity in industries such as Information Technology (IT), Oil and Mining, Engineering, Finance and Film Production.

In Canada, there is great need for skilled professionals in particular industries due to the global technology developments of the ‘90’s and the oil and mining boom recently experienced by several Canadian provinces. Corporations are faced with the challenge of locating skilled professionals and tradespersons abroad. Employers now seek out corporate talent leaders and skilled trades persons not just through North America, but through the rest of the world as well.

Applying for a Social Insurance Number (SIN) & Health Card Coverage

A Social Insurance Number (SIN) is required in order to work in Canada. This card can be applied for at any local Service Canada office. Offices are located in all major cities in Canada. Where an application has been filed in person at the local Service Canada office, you will, in most cases, be issued a SIN on the spot, with the physical card mailed to you at a later date. While there is no charge to make the initial application, charges may apply for replacement of cards if lost or stolen. You may only apply for SIN cards for members of your family who have arrived in Canada.

Health Care Coverage is free in Canada for all Canadian permanent residents, citizens, and even Temporary Residents who hold employer-specific work permits for at least six (6) months. Health care coverage can be applied for at any local Provincial Health Care office. These offices are located in all major cities in every province and territory in Canada. There is no charge for an application for health care coverage. In most provinces and territories, however, one must be a resident for three (3) months before health care coverage can be accessed. Therefore, it is strongly suggested that you purchase temporary 3-month health care insurance for you and your family, upon first your arriving in Canada. You can only apply for health cards for members of the family who have already arrived in Canada.
