Off-Campus Work Permits

Canada Work Permits | Temporary Residence Canada

If you are a full-time student seeking to work off-campus, you will require an Off-Campus Work Permit. The Off-Campus Work Permit Program allows certain foreign students to work off campus while completing their studies. To qualify, you must be a full-time student enrolled at a participating publicly funded post-secondary educational institution or in an approved program at an eligible privately funded institution.

What Limitations are there to the Off-Campus Work Permit?

Before you may start working for an off-campus employer, it is necessary to first obtain a Canada work permit. Once obtained, you may then start working for any employer in any position. When working under this permit, it is important to note the following restrictions:

  • You should only work on a part-time basis during regular academic sessions (up to a maximum of 20 hours per week), and may work full time during scheduled breaks (for example, winter and summer holidays, and spring break)
  • Your studies must continue to be the main purpose of your stay in Canada. As such, you must maintain full-time status as a student in good standing at all times.
