The Self-Employed Persons Program

Self Employed Persons must show the intention and ability to establish a business in Canada that will create employment for themselves and that will make a significant contribution to the economic, cultural or artistic life of Canada.

Do I Qualify?

Self-Employed applicants are assessed based on their (1) business experience (2) artistic/athletic/cultural qualifications and (3) net worth.

Relevant Experience

Individuals applying for Canadian Immigration as Self-Employed Persons must demonstrate that they possess:

  • experience that will have a significant beneficial impact on the cultural or athletic life of Canada (these may include internationally renowned athletes, trainers, writers or others artists)
  • experience in owning and managing a farm as well as the intention and ability to purchase and manage a farm in Canada

Specifically, relevant experience consists of:

  • having participated in cultural activities or athletics on an international level;
  • self-employment experience in cultural or athletic activities;
  • in-depth, significant experience in farm management.

Intention to Establish A Business In Canada

Individuals applying under the Self-Employed Persons Program must possess the intention and ability to establish or purchase a business in Canada that:

  • ensures employment for the applicant;
  • generates adequate income for the subsistence of the applicant and his/her dependents in Canada;
  • makes a significant contribution to Canada’s economy or culture.
